RMG – First journey through the Salesian Provinces to discover Integral Ecology

15 November 2021

(ANS - Rome) - In October 2021, Emanuela Chiang of the Central Youth Ministry department of the Congregation, launched a study on the current state of Integral Ecology in the various Salesian Provinces and houses throughout the world. The purpose of the survey’s is manifold: to understand the sensitivity within the Congregation towards issues related to Integral Ecology as understood by Pope Francis in Laudato Sì; to map existing initiatives carried out directly or in collaboration with others; to outline a strategy with common objectives to be achieved and with different paths according to the contexts, so that all the Salesians in the world can contribute concretely to the care of the Common Home, not only by educating the young, but also by making a personal commitment to leave them a better planet.

In general, the Provinces that replied to the questionnaire demonstrate a significant openness to the issue of integral ecology. In the seven regions of the Salesian world, the situation is quite homogeneous, in the sense that in each region there are already very active Provinces which could act as a driving force or at least as an example for those which, on the contrary, are still at an initial stage.

It will be very important to soon establish a procedural plan for everyone and to support each Province in the drafting of the Provincial Organic Plan (POP) and the Salesian Provincial Educational-Pastoral Project (EPP), so that the vision of Integral Ecology as transversal to the provincial planning is always kept in mind.

Under this scheme, direct contact will also be established with the Provincial Ecology Coordinators to facilitate the transmission of knowledge and facilitate mutual exchange, even at the regional level. The paths and interventions to be proposed will be modular and flexible, according to the different contexts and different levels. It would also be very important to establish study and research courses, which are currently absent; this can only be done in collaboration with the network of Salesian Colleges and Universities.

Finally, it will be essential to strengthen interventions in the regions and countries where the Amazon Forest and/or other natural resources are present, in order to defend and protect them, as they are important for the entire planet.

With this first step towards integral ecology, the Youth Ministry Sector intends to thank the Provinces that have already embarked on a path in this direction and to encourage those who have not yet started. It aims to ensure from now on, support and guidance (albeit at a distance), and accompaniment to walk together on this path which is now necessary and fundamental for the education of young people, towards the protection of the poorest and most vulnerable, and the promotion of the rights of everyone.

Dr. Chiang assists the Rector Major and his Council to animate, coordinate and create ecological awareness in all the Provinces and in the different areas of the Salesian mission, to develop policies at all levels of the Congregation to strengthen the Salesian commitment towards the guardianship of the Common Home.
