Gangarampur, India - November 2021 – On 8 November, the Salesians active in Diamond Harbor and the Missionaries of Charity of Gangarampur, in the state of West Bengal, distributed relief materials (rice, oil, blankets, medicines) to 90 needy families who live on one of the islets of the Sundarbans in the world’s largest mangrove forest at the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers, in the Bay of Bengal. The area has been severely hit by cyclone “Yaas” in recent months and many families, who live only on agriculture, have lost their crops. It took the religious 3 hours to reach their destination, covering 60 km by road and 15 km by boat. The Salesians arrived in Diamond Harbor 20 years ago and today they serve about 15 islands in the Sundarban area.
