Spain – Challenges and hopes for the new year: quality health and education as a priority for building a better world

07 January 2022

(ANS - Madrid) - 2021 has not been easy for millions of people around the world who have had to continue to survive the consequences of the pandemic every day. More poverty, more hunger, more children out of school ... and the uncertainty that pervades everyone about the future and the anxiety and hope for normality. For all these reasons, "Misiones Salesianas", the Salesian Mission Office of Madrid, continues to propose challenges, proposals, and commitments for the new year centered primarily on the most disadvantaged minors and young people of the more than 130 countries where the Salesians are present.

The pandemic once again had a leading role in the activities carried out by "Misiones Salesianas" last year; but above all, it has had it in the daily lives of millions of people who never would have thought that, with their scarce resources, their situation could worsen. In many places there have been new confinements and curfews, children and young people have continued to be unable to go to school and vaccines have not yet reached the countries of the global South in an adequate manner.

But despite all the difficulties, the Salesians continued to support the most disadvantaged by offering all kinds of material help (food, health kits ...), together with personal and spiritual accompaniment and, above all, hope.

In the new year, the spiritual Sons of Don Bosco shall continue to help alleviate the consequences of the pandemic, but also to save children from the streets and minors from trafficking and prostitution, to work for the prevention of early marriages, to rehabilitate and reintegrate minors who have emerged from armed conflicts, to help children and young people who serve sentences in prisons with adults, to accompany orphaned minors, to protect and support migrants and refugees, to evangelize through daily work and human development ... And, above all, Salesians shall continue to offer opportunities for education and to learn a trade to all those who, after having met Don Bosco, intend to give a new course to their life.

Salesian works are safe environments for recreation and integral development where children, adolescents, and young people obtain the tools to become protagonists of their own lives.

“This was the second year in which we asked the Three Kings that no child be left without toys and health for all and that every minor can enjoy the affection of a family, a home, and that he can attend school,” they say from the Salesian Mission Office.

“Our resolutions for the new year,” they add, “are also commitments to those most in need. Despite pandemics, wars, hunger, drought and inequalities, our main objectives continue to be health and access to education.”

Millions of people around the world are comforted by the work of the Salesians. And for the Sons of Don Bosco, the generosity of thousands of people constitutes the daily providence that makes possible the miracle of being able to care for, support, and educate those who need it most.
