(ANS - Warsaw) - Yesterday, February 24, 2022, in light of the escalation of armed activities in Ukraine, the Salesian Mission Office in Warsaw launched a fundraiser for humanitarian aid. Food, water, medicine, electric generators, fuels, setting up centers for displaced persons and internal migrants are the priorities on which the Polish Salesians shall focus.

“We’re in contact with the Salesians who work in Ukraine. Thank God they’re all safe and sound!” they testify from Warsaw. “At the moment there are no material criticalities, but the situation is evolving. Many Ukrainians have begun to flee the areas hit by the bombings. Panic broke out in many places. Some banks have been closed, traffic jams are created outside the city, queues at petrol stations. The Salesians are preparing to welcome internal migrants fleeing the war. They will need help with food, water, medicine, electricity generators, fuel, mattresses, blankets ... In addition to material support, Ukrainians also need spiritual and mental support. In the current situation, it is necessary to remain calm and not succumb to misinformation.”

“Currently, Salesians and Salesians mainly ask for support for prayer. Let's pray for peace in Ukraine and in the world!,” said the Salesian Mission Office in Warsaw.

The Salesians have been working in Ukraine since 1990. They run schools, parishes, oratories, retreat houses and boarding schools. They support the needy, especially children and young people from poor or dysfunctional families.

The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians arrived in Ukraine in 1992, a year after this country regained its independence: they opened their first institute in Lviv, the second in Odessa, and last year they started working in Kiev where they started an elementary school. For years they have supported girls with education and through the long-distance adoption system. In Lviv and Odessa they welcome mainly young students from poor families.
