Hungary – Fr Andrasfalvy, Provincial: "We help wherever we can: with prayer and deeds"

15 March 2022

(ANS - Budapest) - Since February 24, more than 360,000 people fleeing Ukraine have arrived in Hungary. The Hungarian Government has established a National Council for Humanitarian Coordination, which is working to make cooperation between the State, civil and church organizations active in emergency situations as effective as possible. The Salesian Province "Saint Stephen the King" of Hungary (UNG) helps the Ukrainian refugees in the following ways, and together with the whole Salesian Family of Hungary:

At the provincial level, the Salesians collaborate with the Hungarian Malta Charity Organization, and a collaborator of the Salesians is the contact person for the reception of refugees by the Salesians of Don Bosco. This contact person can be reached at This email address is being protected from spambots. In the Salesian communities, oratories, institutes, and parishes, shelters have been secured for a total of about 140 people - among them, several young Nigerian students from Kyiv.

The UNG Province also sent the first sum of money to the Province of Poland-Cracow (PLS) to help it deal with the refugee emergency.

The Salesian Cooperators of Budapest-Óbuda have also raised funds for the emergency, and their fundraising efforts continue.

Each Salesian institute in Hungary is collaborating with their respective centers of the Diocesan Caritas in collecting food, children's clothes, blankets, and other basic necessities, which are then provided to the needy in the places of first aid by Caritas volunteers. In this collection the Vietnamese community in Hungary is also involved, filling a minibus with its supplies.

The Salesian presence in the town of Kazincbarcika, with the collaboration of the school’s students, the Rector of the Salesian community, and the local Caritas, carried out its own collection of goods for the needy and then transported the collected aid to the border with Ukraine.

Salesian schools and oratories are taking action to provide education to Ukrainian minors and to welcome them into their activities.

“‘If brotherly love is like it should be, then the good of one is the good of everyone, the trouble of one is the trouble of everyone,’ said Don Bosco. For our part, we help wherever we can: with prayer and deeds,” concludes UNG Provincial, Fr Andrasfalvy.
