Malta – 170 years of Don Bosco’s apprenticeship contract: Exhibition in Malta College

28 March 2022

(ANS – Paola) – The Malta College for Arts, Science, and Technology (MCAST) together with the College’s Salesian Chaplaincy team held an exhibition on apprenticeship. The guest of honour was Fr Ivo Coelho SDB, Councillor for Formation, who is currently visiting the Salesian Maltese communities.

The theme of this exhibition revolved around St John Bosco and his efforts in working for student apprenticeships. St John Bosco started hubs where young individuals could spend time, learn how to read properly, and learn a skill.

Fr Richard Ebejer, the MCAST Chaplain, stated that “St John Bosco initiated the use of apprenticeship contracts” 170 years ago, defending young people's rights to access the labour market under fair conditions. “Today MCAST follows in St John Bosco's footsteps,” Fr Richard stated.

MCAST students currently following courses at the College had the opportunity to share with the audience their apprenticeship experiences and how these are helping them in excelling in their careers.

Speaking during the event MCAST Principal and CEO Professor Joachim James Calleja argued that “apprenticeships are at the core of today’s students’ learning process.” He elaborated on how MCAST recognizes that different students learn in different ways and this is why apprenticeships are one of the values that the College is built upon.

Fr Ivo Coelho thanked the principal and the College for hosting such a marvellous event and said how unique this kind of collaboration was. In a world faced with the prospect of the replacement of human workers by machines, the integral growth of human beings becomes even more significant and important.

In conclusion, Fr Ivo lead the audience in prayer and proclaimed St John Bosco and Blessed Carlo Acutis patrons and role models for MCAST staff and students.

Fr Richard Ebejer, SDB
