East Timor - Salesian communities strengthen their environmental activities

29 March 2022

East Timor - March 2022 - The Salesian communities of the Vice-Province of East Timor (TLS) carry out various activities in favor of and with respect for the environment. The Salesian community of Quelicai, with the planting of rice that is done 2 or 3 times a year, has ensured better nutrition and reduced the amount of money spent on the purchase. The Salesian community of Fuiloro, among its many activities, runs an agricultural school, so their food and vegetables come mainly from their own agricultural production. Fr Rolando Fernandes, SDB, a missionary in the Northern Philippines, is helping the students of the agricultural school to plant different types of vegetables and trees. The "Don Bosco Comoro" post-novitiate has created a vegetable garden in the backyard and is working with a private organization to collect plastic for recycling. The community of the Comoro Vocational Training Center is training students to sort trash in the vicinity of the school. Fr Jolino Vieira, animator of the "Don Bosco Green Alliance" in East Timor, and a member of the aforementioned community, supports the idea of an eco-friendly campus. They will soon have a plastic recycling machine.
