23 June 2022

Goma, D.R. Congo - June 2022 - On June 16 at the "Gahinja Don Bosco House," of the "Don Bosco Ngangi" Youth Center, the International Day of the African Child was celebrated. The event was celebrated with an exhortation to join efforts with the Salesians of Don Bosco to protect children and promote their rights. Several hundred children and youth from the school recovery center, the Gahinja transit center, and single mothers taken in at "Maison Marguerite" and some parents of the beneficiaries attended the day. Present were political and civil authorities, local, national and international facilities, and organizations working in child protection. For his part, the delegate of the protection authority of the provincial social affairs division briefly recalled the genesis of the African Child Day in memory of the sad events of the Soweto massacre in South Africa in 1976. He praised the commitment of the Salesians to the cause of children's rights and especially children and youth living on the streets. The testimonies of parents of former street children were very touching. The festive youth also expressed themselves through a variety of cultural performances with music, poetry, games, and dance. On the sidelines of this celebration, the Salesians of the AFC-EST Delegation are organizing radio broadcasts in Goma and Bukavu to raise awareness about the rights of children and especially those in street situations.
