Colombia - Salesian Altar Servers Camp

18 August 2016

(ANS - Bogotá) - "Groups are signs of vitality," says the Youth Ministry Handbook. This is an old truth. Don Bosco started groups where young people could share. He encouraged these young people to make the experience of the oratory an evangelizing, educational and vocational experience. Many Salesian vocations came from these groups. Faithful to Don Bosco, the Salesians in many parts of the world continue this important and necessary work. In August, in Colombia, there was a camp for the Salesian Altar Servers Movement.

We know that the life of Don Bosco was marked by the presence of the group which he founded and organized, the Joy Club or Società dell’Allegria.

In the first week of August the second Altar Servers Vocation Camp took place at the Don Bosco Centre in Bogota.  It was attended by 110 boys and girls from different works.

The camp brought all the altar servers together to get to know their role better and to strengthen the groups in different parishes, oratories and other centres. The Camp was led by Fr Miller Barbosa SDB, Fredy Valdivia SDB, Wilfredo Higuera SDB, Laura Herrera and Miguel Romo. Some Salesians in practical training also helped and participated: Leopoldo Andrés Gómez, David Ricardo Medina, Renson Velandia and Ferney Pulido.

"Don Bosco valued the group as an educational and vocational presence." Faithful to the charism of the founder, we continue this excellent work because vocations will come from these groups.
