Sudan - Solar energy for "St. Joseph" Vocational Training Center in Khartum

22 July 2022

(ANS - Khartum) - Thanks to the Spanish NGO "Bosco Global," which is working to implement more and more sustainable development projects, the project "Solar Energy for the St. Joseph Vocational Training Center in Khartum" was born in Sudan, allowing the implementation of a new specialization in the field of this important renewable energy.

During this academic year, in fact, first- and second-year vocational students, who are following the Electricity course, were able to install several solar panels in three different buildings of their school. The project was also made possible thanks to financial support from the "Magone" Foundation and the Provincial Council of Huesca, Spain.

"Power outages of 10 hours a day can occur in Sudan, so solar energy is a key alternative to this problem, as well as making a very positive contribution to the environment. Currently, renewable energy is booming in the country and growing at a fast pace," they explain from St. Joseph School.

The 4-month training course was provided during the 2021-2022 school year, during which students learned the installation process, operation, and proper use, putting it into practice by installing solar panels in the various buildings that make up the educational complex.

"In this way, we were able to adapt the students' education to the realities and challenges of our society, and to offer quality education that serves to improve the employability of our young people, and to achieve a dignified life for them and their families," they say from the Salesian Center. "In addition, thanks to the use of this natural source, we also saved on resources, bringing a higher quality of life to all those who attend the educational complex."

The students especially appreciated the use of solar panels and were encouraged to continue along this green line in the future.

The "St. Joseph" Vocational Training Center in Khartum is run by the Salesians and offers numerous courses to prepare for different trades: welding, mechanics, air conditioning, electricity, carpentry, automotive mechanics, masonry, and computer science.
