Italy – Salesians, Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, and Salesian Youth Sports Clubs: renewed efforts to promote Don Bosco's mission through educational and social sports

23 February 2023

(ANS - Rome) - The National Center for Salesian Works (CNOS) and the Salesian Youth Sports Clubs (PGS) have renewed their commitment to work together in the world of youth to achieve, in concrete terms, the mission inspired by Don Bosco through the promotion of sports. In this sense, "Salesians for the Social APS" will play a key role in developing concrete actions to serve the territory with PGS as its partner.

The letter of intent between the President of CNOS, Fr. Roberto Dal Molin, SDB, and the President of PGS, Ciro Bisogno, signed on the Feast Day of St. John Bosco, was followed by the memorandum of understanding signed on February 18 in Rome at the headquarters of the Olympic Preparation Center "Giulio Onesti" by the President of PGS and the President of Salesians for Social APS, Fr. Francesco Preite; thus, an operational path has been launched to promote sports initiatives aimed at young people.

Together, through a renewed sharing of choices, goals and objectives, they want to foster and develop social policies for the good of young people through sports, especially those most disadvantaged and at risk of social exclusion. The cornerstones of the agreement that have been identified concern: the presentation of sports and social projects, development of sports activities in the territories, training courses aimed at those working in sports, and organic monitoring of the interventions and projects implemented together concerning the fight against educational poverty and the promotion of an inclusive social environment for young people.

PGS joined the network of Salesians for Social APS as an ordinary member. Previously joined by Salesians for the Social were the other associations promoted by CNOS: the Social Youth Tourism (TGS) and the Sociocultural Youth Cine-Circles (CGS).

"The National Center of Salesian Works shares with PGS the educational mission in sports animation, already in place in many territories, and with this renewed commitment, where the right conditions will be created, it shall be possible to further start and support paths and initiatives for the growth of young people in Salesian style," says Fr. Roberto Dal Molin, president of the National Center of Salesian Works.

"Salesian Youth sports centers have young people and their integral growth at heart. This renewed spirit of sharing with the Salesians Don Bosco and the presence of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians will allow strengthening the development of sport as a tool of social cohesion and strong educational impact. Associative identity is fundamental to carrying out our mission in the territories on a daily basis," said Dr. Bisogno.

"Sport, especially in our peripheries, is increasingly presenting itself as a social place to welcome and educate children and young people in the style of Don Bosco. The protocol signed between 'Salesians for Social APS' and PGS will allow them to collaborate together on projects, sports activities, and training of sports animators. We are also pleased to welcome into the Salesian social network, another national reality like PGS, after having already welcomed CGS and TGS," said Fr. Francesco Preite, president of Salesians for Social.
