Peru - A medical-surgical and dental campaign for the needy

12 October 2016

(ANS - Piura) - The city of Piura, in northern Peru, is the main producer and national exporter of organic bananas, mango, lemon, grapes and products like coffee. It is also the main producer of oil and phosphates and the second in rice production. Piura is one of the regions that give the greatest contribution to the national GDP, but 35% of the population live in poverty. Worse still, this region is among the worst in terms of health conditions. The Don Bosco Foundation of Peru, knowing the socio-economic situation, has launched a free medical, surgical and dentistry campaign in the city of Paita.

The campaign started on 3 October, with the help of a group of medical and dental professionals who are part of the ULYSSES Humanitarian Organization.

As part of the campaign eighty surgeries were performed (for vesicles, hernia and lipoma), dental examinations were offered to more than a hundred people, and oral health education given to more than one thousand children from the schools most typical of the area such as the "Fe y Alegría" and "Carlos Durand" schools,  which also received toothbrushes and toothpaste.

This humanitarian social service has been offered since 2005 in different parts of Peru where the Salesian Congregation carries out its missionary work, such as the Missions of San Lorenzo (Loreto), Pucallpa, Cusco, Pisco and Piura, with the sole purpose of improving the quality of life of people.

The free medical campaign was made possible through the collaboration of a group of 14 doctors and dentists from the ULYSSES humanitarian organization, the Regional Government of Piura, Diresa, the Don Bosco Foundation of Peru, the Naval Station of Paita, the City of Paita, the Terminal Port Euroandinos, the Stella Maris Institute of Lima, the Salesian Institute and the Food Bank.

Speaking on behalf of the 14 French and Italian doctors who contributed, Dr. Daniel Sommacale said he was pleased because the beneficiaries were low-income patients whose quality of life has been greatly improved.
