Ecuador - A Salesian educational proposal called the Preventive System

27 October 2016

(ANS - Quito) - In the fall of 1841, shortly after he was ordained priest, Don Bosco visited the young people in the prisons of Turin. He was shocked by what he saw and he promised God: "I will take care of abandoned boys, I will give my life for them." But he wanted to do it in a preventive way. He chose very definitely the way of education: a type of education that prevents evil. The Salesians of Ecuador are now reflecting on this educational option in a Congress entitled "Good Citizens and the Preventive System", which has attracted hundreds of lay people who are involved in the Salesian mission.

The congress is subtitled "The future of prevention" and represents an opportunity to bring together people from different backgrounds and develop three fundamental and essential areas of study for this historic moment in Ecuador and Latin America: citizenship and society; education and preventive system; youth and society.

The objective is to reflect on the Preventive System from different aspects, approaches, prospects of social and experiential knowledge, and progress in research on the Salesian educational project in the present circumstances and in the complex relationships between young people, school and society.

Among those participating in the event are Fr Jorge Molina, Provincial of the Salesians of Ecuador and Mr Juan Pablo Salgado, Vice-Rector for Research of the Salesian Polytechnic University. Among the speeches there is one from Germán Muñoz, on the theme: "Debates and current perspectives on citizenship. Contributions from a preventive perspective ".

Fr Javier Herrán, Rector of the Salesian Polytechnic University, will be responsible for the final report, entitled "Citizenship and the Preventive System".

One of the great contributions of Salesians to education is, without doubt, the Preventive System. "In this society the Salesian educational proposal retains its ability to form, in an authentically Christian perspective, a citizen aware of their social, professional and political responsibilities, able to work for justice and promote the common good, with a particular sensitivity and concern for young people who are weak and marginalized."
