Ecuador - "Communication is a matter of the heart": Salesian Communication Day

23 November 2016

(ANS - Cuenca) - Don Bosco was a born communicator. He used various methods such as theatre and music to communicate the message of love to the poorest young people. The decision to spread the experience of the oratory was another way of communicating. To continue his legacy the first Salesian Communication Day and Meeting of IT was held in Cuenca. It was attended by 70 people, including local communication delegates, Salesian correspondents, young members of journalism clubs and computer technicians. The motto was "Communication is a matter of the heart.”

The aim of the meeting was to highlight and strengthen the communication methods within Salesian Ecuador. During this year’s Extraordinary Visitation to Ecuador by Fr Timothy Ploch, Regional Councillor for Inter-America, he said that "communication is an essential part of the Salesian mission". His words gave a significant boost to the organization and development of the day.

During the opening ceremony, Dr Marcelo Mejia, Social Communication Delegate, urged the participants to continue the communication mission in their different fields of action.

This Communication Day has had a special significance because it was attended by Salesians in formation. They were actively involved in the discussions on the importance of communicating in today's world and of learning about new digital tools which young people use in sharing.

The participants took part in different workshops in the fields of writing, corporate communications, video, radio, social networks, graphics and photography. Through fundamental theoretical concepts, and with attention to the practical aspects, they tried to encourage the creation of new creative communication products and, at the same time, make it possible to educate in the style of Don Bosco.

Fr Wladimir Acosta, Delegate for Youth Ministry, introduced the theme: "Salesian Youth Ministry and Communications", while Fr Marcelo Chávez spoke on "Education and new technologies."

The day ended with a visit to Cuenca Salesian Graphic Centre, where the participants were able to learn about the process of creating a magazine, a book, and other products.

This Salesian meeting was an attempt to offer a space for the exchange of experiences among communicators and for the ongoing formation of those who perform this service in the different Salesian houses in Ecuador.
