Italy – World Consulta of Missions Sector and CORAM: after 150th anniversary of first missionary expedition

21 November 2025

(ANS – Turin) – After the General Chapter 29, the new Rector Major, Fr. Fabio Attard SDB had the opportunity to celebrate well the 150th anniversary of the expedition of the first Salesian missionaries. It was realized by inviting the provincial delegates for missionary animation (PDMAs) from all 92 present provinces, covering all the 137 countries, where Salesians are living. After the great once in a lifetime celebration of sending out the 156th missionary expedition, those, who are coordinating in each region the delegates for missionary animation (CORAM) remained for another 2 days in Turin together with Fr. Jorge Crisafulli SDB and his Team of the Mission Sector, who help him in Rome Sacro Cuore Sede Centrale Salesiana, according to the Constitutions No. 138.

The meeting was in line with the traditional world level consulta about the Salesian missions, to evaluate the past six years and plan for the next six years.

On 13th November, after the introduction by Fr. Jorge Crisafulli SDB and an evaluation of the previous days by Fr. Pavel Ženíšek SDB, the six CORAM presented the activities and structure of Missionary animation in the provinces and countries. On 14th November mr. Marco Fulgaro presented at the progress made between 2008 and 2025, since that time has passed with regular meetings and consultation on world level, involving not only the Missions Sector and the General Councillors, but also SDBs and FMAs and those who are involved as lay in the Salesian missionary animation. What is new since the CG29, that the Mission animation must be integrated as core charism into every single comunity’s and confrere’s life, completely cooperating with youth ministry, formation and social communication. Fr. Reginaldo Cordeiro SDB then led the discussion on the role of CORAM and how to improve coordination.

The next consultation was about looking at each region sending missionaries, how the provinces help the missionary vocation discernment, how they prepare them, keep contact with them and how they accompany them even in their elder age. Then we examined the receiving process: how missionaries are welcomed, integrated and accompanied during the first period of inculturation as well as during their lifelong missionary life.

The presentation of good practices and paths to follow was lead by Fr. Eric Mairura SDB, then we heard about the 3 stages of formation organized for missionaries by the Mission Sector:

  • Corso Germoglio for those, who prepare for new missionary expedition,
  • Corso Respiro for Salesians and members of the Salesian Family who desire a time of missionary renewal,
  • Corso Sorgente for those, who at elderly age would like to receive a new enthusiasm and launch, to rediscover the proper mission in his still active future years.

The consulta was a wonderful experience to learn and know about each other, and this way to help the General Councillor Fr. Jorge Crisafulli SDB. His team of Missions Sector consists of Fr. Eric Mairura SDB, responsible for the missionary solidarity, Fr. Pavel Ženíšek SDB, respoinsible for missionary animation, Fr. Reginaldo Cordeiro SDB responsible for missionary formation, Mr. Marco Fulgaro, responsible for missionary animation and secretary.

The six regional coordinators present were: Fr. Privat Ignace Fouda SDB from Cameroon, coordinating Africa-Madagascar still both regions, Fr. Tiago Eliomar G. SDB from Brazil Sao Paolo, coordinating America Cono South region, Fr. Arun Charles SDB, from Cambodia, coordinating East Asia – Oceania region, Br. Géza Nadudvari SDB from Hungary, coordinating Central-North Europe Region, Fr. Edwin Marcelo Coronel SDB from Ecuador, coordinating Interamerica region, Fr. Joseph Sunny Palamthattel SDB from India, Shillong, coordinating South-Asia region.

The request that each partecipant agreed was to ask the Provincials not to change frequently the confreres, who are responsible for the mission animation in order to have a continuous and integral service in this essential territory of our Salesian charism.
