Bolivia - 25 years of the Don Bosco Project: "Commitment of young people towards the poorest"

07 February 2017

(ANS - Santa Cruz) - The Salesians in Bolivia encourage young people to practise solidarity as their own mission. Every January, hundreds of young people meet with the desire to serve others; but this requires serious preparation. In 2017 these young "pre-volunteers" gathered in the city of Santa Cruz as part of the Don Bosco Project.

This year there were 54 young people from La Paz, Cochabamba, Sucre, Santa Cruz and the northern region. They wanted to "animate and encourage service and solidarity of the Salesian Family towards those most in need, as part of their commitment and mission." These young people shared their time and talents with the children and young people from different family homes.

The Don Bosco Project started with a lot of energy and joy. "It is now beginning a new phase in its history, with the joy of the results achieved in the past 25 years and the challenge of starting with a renewed commitment, with new enthusiasm, with specific objectives to be achieved, with the certainty of having the support of God, of friends, of brothers and co-workers, and especially counting on the significant presence of so many young people just waiting to be able to enjoy this experience with  good organization and the vocation to the service of so many people," said Fr Octavio Sabbadin.

The venue was Hogar Don Bosco in Santa Cruz, where all the participants were welcomed and given a brief introduction on the Pre-voluntary training and its purpose, by Mr Félix Ponox. Then Mass was celebrated presided over by the Rector, Fr Sabbadin. The young people were informed of their destination and given a backpack and materials to guide their activities.

They young volunteers spent the next two weeks in the service of others, giving of their time and leaving their comfort zone to devote themselves to bringing joy to others. The activities were carried out at Hogar Don Bosco. Mano Amiga, Patio Don Bosco and Techo Pinardi, where they accompanied the children in games, leisure activities and work.
