Ecuador - In the footsteps of Fr "Yankuam Jintia"

24 May 2017

(ANS - Quito) - On May 2, Fr Agustín Togo and the young Salesian Edwin Cárdenas had the opportunity to wander towards the neighboring village of Peru. The goal was to attend the reception ceremony of the remains of Fr Luigi Bolla in the villages of the Achuar indigenous people. The questions arise almost without thinking about them: "what led you to go on the trip? What experiences have you experienced in such a short time? Which message do you have received after having followed the footsteps of Fr Yankuam Jintia?”

It was a 5-day journey, from Wasakentsa to the Achuar Kuyuntsa indigenous community, plus another 5 days for the return. Walking on closed and marshy trails, having to walk away from our path to pass through the enormous forest, meeting snakes and other typical animals of the Amazon, sailing for 5 to 6 hours under the sun and rain, sleeping on the benches or on the floor, enduring efforts, hunger and thirst, hours and hours of walking ... is a unique experience.

Already in Kuyuntsa, on May 6, well received by Fr Diego Clavijo, we have started working in order to help them. We spent the time with over 100 "etserin," the promoters of the Word of God, and more than 200 Achuar, arrived from distant places with the only purpose of burying their "Dad": Fr Yankuam Jintia.

On May 10, the main day of the feast and the end of the pilgrimage, after the sound of the tui tun, at 3:00 am, and the traditional Wayus rite, the few "settlers" and a large number of Achuar, arrived with their rites, prayers and traditional songs to begin the burial ceremony of the remains of Fr Bolla.

Hundreds of feelings have crowded the chapel, too small to house all those present; but the strongest of all the feelings was the sincere conviction, both of the Salesians and the Achuars, of continuing the work made by Fr Yankuam Jintia, as he was called by the indigenous people, the "Twilight's Way", which since that day has rested in peace among his people.

We left gain from Kuyuntsa on May 11 with a group of 30 Achuars who also have come as representatives of the Achuar community of Ecuador, being sure to have lived a unique experience that challenges us and invites to commit us to follow the living testimony given by Fr Yankuam Jintia.
