Italy – "Giovannino's dream:" the dream of 9-year-old Don Bosco told to children

12 July 2017

(ANS - Rome) - "Giovannino's Dream" is the first e-color book created by the "Salesians for Social Work - SCS / CNOS Federation", a proposal for young children to read and color. The story is divided into 8 illustrated tables and reflects the dream St. John Bosco had at the age of 9 which would later become the guideline for all his life with and for young people.

It is not just a simple album to print and color, but an educational tool to allow children - and adults – to learn of a dream wherein good triumphs over evil.

"Don Bosco and dreams are an inseparable combination that characterizes our 'Saint of the Young',” says Fr Giovanni D'Andrea, Salesian President for Social Work. "In the dream he had as a 9-year-old child, Jesus and Mary point out John's mission in broad strokes: the field of work (poor and abandoned children); the educational method (not with force or threats, but with charity and kindness); the attitude to be taken (make yourself humble, strong and robust); his teacher and support (Mary Help of Christians); the results of this commitment (transformation of wolves into lambs). We all have dreams we carry in our hearts, and our task is to understand and make them concrete by following what the Lord tells us."

The e-book was created by the Salesians for Social Work – Federazione SCS / CNOS and narrated through images created by Stefania Gagliano, a children's book illustrator. "There is no indication of how to color, nor any particular tips on the cover,” says the illustrator. “This is because the real interpreters of this instrument will be them, the children! Only by reading, or perhaps listening to the story read by mom and dad, will the child know that the ferocious animals will probably be dark and bloody, that the Madonna will be candid and bright, like the goodness she radiates, and that Giovannino will get confused with the colors of the meadows and the vineyards of the first table. The palette of colors each child will have will be their own personal interpretation and association of thoughts and images."

"I think that the knowledge of Giovannino's dream is more than useful for a child's growth, knowing for certain that dreams have always stimulated their curiosity," concludes the illustrator.
