Guatemala - Two Argentines in Petén: "We found God in the people with whom we shared this path"

11 August 2017

(ANS - San Benito Petén) - Florencia and Maite are two Argentine doctors who spent several months as volunteers at the Department of Peten, Guatemala, as part of the project for the Health Pastoral Care of the Salesian Parish in San Benito Petén. Here is their testimony.

The enthusiasm that motivates us to live this experience comes from afar and is illuminated by our Salesian charism, which since childhood has been growing continuously, and has always exhorted us to be sensitive to the lives of our neighbors. After graduation, the long quest for the place we would fulfill our mission began. Thanks to the support of our families and friends, and to constant prayer, in October 2016 we began working as volunteers.

We have felt very much at home since our arrival. The people were very warm (as was the weather) and we were immediately invited to participate in parish activities.

Our main job was to deal with the health of those arriving at the "Artemide Zatti" medical dispensary. Located in the "Candelaria" district, people from both the city and neighboring villages arrive every day. It is a dispensary specially dedicated to low income people, and offers medical advice, basic healthcare and low cost medicines.

Also, once a week, together with a female doctor and a nurse, we would go to the area's remote communities to take care of those who could not reach the dispensary and to visit a home that hosts many patients in delicate conditions.

We then had the opportunity to learn about and visit the Migrant House "Bethania", and we were able to adhere to the initiatives of the San Francisco of Sales Oratory and other youth groups belonging to the Salesian Youth Movement.

And since we both participate in the PAAS program, which provides First Aid training in Argentina's Salesian houses, we both wanted to export this initiative to the parishes of San Benito and Guatemala City to share and highlight the importance of taking care of one's life and health.

The contact with the people we met was extremely gratifying. With certainty, we can say we have found God in the people with whom we shared this path. We invite all those who who have the curiosity to put themselves at the service of others to nourish that "spark" so that they, too, may be invited to continue to build the Kingdom of God.
