(ANS - Rome) - Today, Wednesday 17 October, the "International Day for the Eradication of Poverty" is celebrated. Is it solely a day for the commemoration and celebrations by those who are not poor? "What does the cry of the poor express if not their suffering and loneliness, their disappointment and hope?", asks Pope Francis; who then confirms that this day is "a small response that from the entire Church, spread all over the world, is addressed to the poor of every kind and of every land so that they do not think that their cry has fallen into the void."

The UN 2020 Agenda for Sustainable Development promises not to leave anyone behind and aims to eradicate poverty by that year. But one wonders: which countries are progressing along this road? Which governments fight resolutely to eradicate poverty? It is enough to check how governments really oppose corruption, which always goes to the detriment of the poorest.

The Holy Father recalls that "Poverty is not sought, but created by selfishness, pride, greed and injustice."

What do the Salesians do to eradicate poverty, some readers will ask. The answer could be simple and complex at the same time. UNESCO's plans to eradicate poverty can easily be compared to the thought of Don Bosco when they declare: "to eradicate poverty we also require greater participation of women and men, starting with young people, whose emancipation is the key to success." In every corner of the earth where they are located, the Salesians have chosen to educate and be with poor and abandoned young people.

One of the latest initiatives to eradicate poverty is the one that "Solidaridad Don Bosco" launched in Ecuador, empowering small producers in the sale of native plants and herbs. One is Flor Aidé Aguilar, 22, a single mother, from the Yurak-Ukha indigenous community, who sells "native forest plants" and who thanks to this project dreams of having her own land, selling her plants directly and getting out of poverty.

This International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has one objective: that all men and women of the world know that in the world there is a drama that shouts to heaven: that "there are more than 800 million poor people ... who do not have access to adequate food, water and sanitation ", according to UN Development Program data.
