Colombia - "Hydraulic Laboratory": a quality service at the service of youth

05 April 2016

(ANS - Bogotá) - In many parts of the world technical professions see a decrease in the intake of students. The "skilled trades", such as electricians, locksmiths, plumbers, painters, seem to have lost appeal among young people. Yet these skilled trades are in demand all over the world. Don Bosco understood that to work with the poor and needy young people it was necessary to offer short courses in what today are called "skilled trades." And the Salesians in Colombia continue to provide a learning space for young people who have no other option.

On 31 March a Hydraulic Laboratory was inaugurated at the "Juan Bosco Obrero" Cehtre in Ciudad Bolívar, thanks to the donation of the Rotary Club who provided materials and tools to be used for the training of young people with few resources. In this way the boys who attend will be able to achieve a technical certification and be trained as good Christians and honest citizens.

Workers in Hydraulics, also called "plomería" in several Latin American countries, are obviously necessary in modern cities, although this work seems little appreciated by young people. "Qualified mechanics, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, masons or welders, for example, are among the most difficult professionals to find" according to a study published in the "La Carta de la Bolsa" newspaper.

The inauguration was attended by Fr Jaime García Cuéllar, founder of the Centre, the Rector, Fr Héctor Franco and members of the Educative Pastoral Community, in a busy morning organized by the young people who will benefit from the various courses at the centre. The guests were entertained by the band, and by dances and artistic presentations and refreshments prepared by the school of gastronomy.

Following the example of Don Bosco, the Salesians continue to work for the benefit of the poorest young people, offering them short training courses that will help them to live as good Christians and honest citizens.
