Italy – "The houses of honest citizens"

07 April 2016

(ANS - Rome) - In Italy there are over a million children living in absolute poverty and over three-and-a-half million are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, with no opportunity to build a happy future. The Salesians in Italy believe that education is the tool to illuminate the future of all these little ones and that it is the prerequisite to get out of situations of marginalization and poverty that can still be found in many cities.

The project "Houses of Don Bosco", backed and supported by the Salesian Outreach - Federation SCS / CNOS in collaboration with "Missioni Don Bosco", on behalf of children and adolescents aged 6 to 16 years, provides centres where they can study, play and have access to educational and sports activities otherwise not available to them.

In collaboration with the Salesian Provinces of Italy, "The houses of honest citizens" were started. These are centres where children and teenagers aged between 6 and 16 can learn, play and have access to educational and sports activities that otherwise they could not have. In the most difficult areas of Catania, Foggia and Locri these houses offer help for school activities and especially the support that is often missing in the family.

They operate through activities both during school hours and extra-school, through the active involvement and participation of young students, teachers and above all their families.

According to a leader from the Sacred Heart Oratory in Foggia, "The after-school services allow us to help children who have attention difficulties, cognitive impairment or dyslexia. Several parents do not have the opportunity to follow them because of work commitments or inability for some other reason and so our help is essential."
