RMG - World Council on Social Communication kicks off: a new global context awaits today's Salesians

21 February 2019

(ANS - Rome) – With the presence of more than 20 Salesians and lay people, today, February 21, the World Consultation aka Consulta on Social Communication begins; its title: "Which Salesian communicators for young people in the digital world?" Fr Filiberto Gonzalez, Councilor General for Social Communications of the Salesian Congregation, declared: "For us, Salesians and lay people, young people are waiting, (young people) who speak a different language that we must know in order to be able to walk with them and accompany them."

Participating in the World Council are representatives of the five continents, namely Salesians working in the field of Social Communications and lay collaborators in the mission that dedicate their time in the service of the Provinces.

"The proposal of the Dicastery for Social Communications," said Fr González on opening, "is to offer to the Provincials, the Delegates of Communication and those responsible for formation an essentially Salesian profile, starting from the current communicative perspective. With this profile of Salesian we look at the present and to the future of our mission."

To achieve this objective, each participant was asked to present studies on communication and the world of youth. The themes addressed during this meeting are directly linked to Salesian work at the service of young people. They will therefore reflect on topics such as: the meaning of communication planning, communication in the event of a crisis, the diversity and quality of information, the new world of Social Networks, the main lines of Educommunication, requisite skills in the field of technology, elements of institutional communication, training processes in the field of communication, spirituality in the digital world, images and videos as a means of evangelization.

"These are common themes and topics, but observed from different and complementary points of view, they will offer enormous wealth for the reflection and orientation of the Salesians of the world," continued Fr González. "We want to motivate Salesians to grow in these aspects, so that they have the tools to be able to dialogue with young people and with today's eminently digital society."

Participating at the Consulta are: Fr Javier Valiente (SSM), Carolina Triana (COB), Fr Juan Pablo Abreu (RMG), Zaida Navarrete (CAM), Mercedes Baxzos (ARS), José Luis Muñoz (RMG), Fr Gildásio Mendes Dos Santos (BCG) Fr Moreno Filipetto (ICP), Fr João Carlos Rodrigues Ribeiro (BRE), Fr Jesús Jurado (RMG), Fr Lukasz Nawrat (IRL), Fr Jacob Iruppakkaattu (RMG), Samuel Job (AFW), Hilario Seo (RMG) ), Fr Joaquim Fernandes (INB), Fr Harris Pakkam (RMG), Marc Auguste Kambiré (AFO), Jean Marc Marie Mutangala (UPS), Fr Rastislav Hamracek (SLK), Fr Peter Gonsalves (UPS), Fr Lijo Vadakkan (AET), Fr Fidel Orendain (FIS), Jakeline Lira (SUE) and Basil Fitzpatrick (AUS).
