Cambodia – Formation workshop for Salesian Cooperators in East Asia-Oceania Region

27 May 2019

(ANS - Sihanoukville) - Two years after the Tokyo 2017 Regional Congress for East Asia-Oceania, the leaders of the region's Association of Salesian Cooperators (SSCC) gathered for a 4-day meeting (24-27 May ) at the “Don Bosco” campus in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, under the guidance of the region's World Councilor, Philip Yu, to give life to a training workshop that helps them to discern how to promote the association's growth, at all levels.

Participating in the event, alongside the Councilor for the East Asia-Oceania Region of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr Václav Klement, are 58 people from the association's 11 countries and 7 provinces.

The meeting opened on Friday 24 May with Fr Roel Soto, Provincial of the Delegation of Cambodia, and the solemn Eucharist in honor of Mary Help of Christians, followed by the procession of the statue of the Help of Christians across the large Salesian campus. After a moment of fraternal agape, the first day ended with the "Salesian goodnight" offered by the participants of Japan, centered on the increasingly necessary collaboration between religious and laity in the Salesian Family.

On the second day Mr. Yu opened the meeting urging those present to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in debates and moments of personal reflection. Then Fr Klement illustrated all the material gathered in preparation for the gathering, condensed into a brochure containing 50 interviews with as many SSCCs of the entire region.

Subsequently, in the two morning sessions, the progress of the project “For young people” was first presented and then elaborated upon via small groups, while in the afternoon there was time to learn about the reality of the Salesian house in Sihanoukville, through interaction with the students who attend the house and with the entire educational community. The second day ended with a visit to the city of Sihanoukville and a pilgrimage to the parish dedicated to St. Michael Archangel.

Finally, on Sunday 26, the Delegate of Social Communication of Cambodia, Fr Albeiro Rodas, with his team, presented several useful interviews to highlight a few key points of the workshop's reflection: what attracts you to the vocation of the Salesian Cooperators? How do you live the Preventive System? How do you share the Salesian charism and your specific vocation? What is your contribution to the renewal of the association?

The work of this training workshop was, in fact, organized as a path of discernment.
