"The largest and richest region of biodiversity in Peru is the Amazon," says E. Ortiz, "which covers 60% of the country's territory. It counts 31 ecosystems and 14,712 animal species, and hosts a plurality of ancestral cultures and over 60 ethnic groups." Yet the region is the most forgotten of all, due to the indifference of governments.
The Salesians have been present since 2001. Their mission area is located in the department of Loreto, in the indigenous communities of San Lorenzo, San Fernando and Kuyuntsa, where they accompany over 8,000 children, adolescents, young people and communities.
For many years, projects have been launched in favor of the communities. In San Lorenzo there is a parish, several chapels, and an itinerant service in the indigenous communities and along the banks of the Marañón river, within the VIS-Achuar Project. In San Fernando there is the Intercultural Training Center "Yánkuam Jintia", with several chapels; while in Kuyuntsa parishes, itinerant missionary services and boarding schools for young indigenous people are active.
The Amazon needs the reconstruction of the infrastructure of the "Yánkuam Jintia" Intercultural Training Center in San Fernando, damaged by the earthquake, to continue to provide quality technical education and human-Christian formation to the young indigenous people of the ethnic groups Achuar, Kandozi , Mestizos and Quechua.
Furthermore, the structure of the reception house for indigenous girls of the Missionary Society of San Lorenzo must be repaired, while two other missionary chapels needs to be restored to continue to "evangelize by educating and educating by evangelizing."
Now it is time to help with food and shelter the brothers and sisters affected in the indigenous communities of San Lorenzo, San Fernando and Kuyuntsa, which society and the government have forgotten.
