Peru – Generous women are betting on the education of needy

12 May 2016

(ANS - Callao) - The Association of Damas Salesianas is a civil, non-profit, humanitarian and evangelization organization, of Catholic women who direct their efforts to serving the poor, especially women and children. They are part of the Salesian Family and are present in 23 countries. The founder was Fr Miguel González, a Venezuelan Salesian who in May 1968 started this organization, which has been spreading rapidly around the world. In the Callao district of Puerto Chalaco, the Damas Salesianas are working to meet one of the priorities of the group, namely education.

The Salesian work in Callao is typical Salesian work. The Salesians have decided to continue to work there despite the serious problems of violence and death that mark the situation in the area. Violence and "contract killings" are among the worst of the scourges. "The Peruvian State has extended the state of emergency in the region of Callao, because of the high crime rate".

The Damas Salesianas work in a house near the Salesian house, caring for children and providing teenagers with a space for study and peace and quiet to think and do their homework, but above all giving them the help of a mother. With the affection and love that characterize them, they help children living in the remoter areas and the dangerous suburbs of Callao.

With dedication and hard work this important group of the Salesian Family was able to get a building all its own: a "Welcome Home", which has as its patron St Dominic Savio, and where they accompany and help dozens of children in need of support.

At Callao violence and death are part of everyday life. Children and teenagers live with this violence. Thanks to the generosity of these women, belonging to the Salesian Family, the quality of life is improving for the children of Callao.
