Vatican City, Vatican - 30 September 2023 - This morning, during the Ordinary Public Consistory, Pope Francis bestowed the cardinal's biretta and ring on Salesian Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, assigning him the Diacony of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice in Via Tuscolana.
(ANS – Rome) – The coat of arms and motto of Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, were unveiled on the occasion of his creation as cardinal.
(ANS – Rome) – On the day on which the Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, is solemnly created cardinal, the ANS review on the Sons of Don Bosco who became cardinals concludes. The last Salesian to be created cardinal before the Rector Major was the Timorese Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, who at 55 years of age is currently also one of the youngest members of the College of Cardinals.
(ANS – Rome) – The eighteenth Salesian, in chronological order, to be admitted among the Cardinals of the Catholic Church was Spaniard Cristóbal López Romero, called to this role by Pope Francis in the consistory of 5 October 2019. A born communicator, he has served the people of God on three continents, always using his voice and his authority to defend the rights of the weakest in the true Salesian style.
(ANS - Rome) - The second Salesian to be created a cardinal by Pope Francis, on 14 February 2015, was Uruguayan Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet. A scholar and lecturer, with a history of holding government posts also in his home Province, he is highly esteemed by Pope Francis, who has entrusted him with many responsibilities in various bodies of the Roman Curia.
(ANS – Rome) – After weeks of anticipation throughout the Salesian Family, next Saturday, 30 September 2023, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major of the Salesians, will be solemnly created a cardinal by the Holy Father Pope Francis, as part of an Ordinary Public Consistory that will see the creation of 20 other cardinals including archbishops, bishops, patriarchs and priests.

Italy – A Salesian on the front line of the war in Ukraine: "Being close counts, words come later"(ANS - Rome) - As he tells with a gentleness that does not seem to come from horror, he is "resting a little bit" in Rome these days. Fr Oleh Ladnyuk is a Ukrainian Salesian priest who is a military chaplain at the front, among the soldiers who fight in defence of their country and among the civilians who for over two years have seen their lives wiped out. He brings humanitarian aid where the missiles fall and from those places he helps with the evacuation of young people and adults - so far at least 500 people, but there are probably many more. These days the Salesian – who carries out his ministry in Dnipro and teaches History in a state school in the city – is in Rome to take part with two other priests and a dozen lay people from his country in the "Accompanying when Trauma Hits" course hosted by the Pontifical Salesian University in collaboration with the Faculty of Educational Sciences, with the DON BOSCO NEL MONDO Foundation and the Don Bosco Network. A project that aims to provide theoretical and methodological tools to deal with the traumas caused by war.

Towards the establishment of protection and prevention models": PGS conference with UPS(ANS – Rome) – The synergy between the Salesian Youth Sports Centres (PGS) and the Pontifical Salesian University (UPS) in Rome gave rise to the conference on "Education and culture of safeguarding in sport. Towards the establishment of models of protection and prevention", which will take place on 13 April, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., at the UPS facilities in Rome.
