Smiling, thoughtful, tired, focused, happy ... This was Don Bosco's face. His face was the most faithful expression of his heart. His face spoke. His face communicated every phase of his life, every time he was photographed in France, Spain or Italy. His face spoke of the Saint's passion for young people.

Turin, Italy - 1886 - During the beatification and canonization process of Don Bosco, the theological censors asked: "When did Don Bosco pray?" The photograph of the saint entitled "Don Bosco on his knees" was taken in Turin in 1880 by photographer Michele Schemboche. It is the answer that testifies that Don Bosco was a man deeply of God, a man who gave his time to prayer. The photo shows Don Bosco kneeling, with his eyes fixed on the image of Mary and Jesus. The image has the canons of the time, but Don Bosco is perceived with a serene, spontaneous and natural face.

Turin, Italy - 1868 - The photograph we propose today is that of "Don Bosco with a suffering face". This photo was taken in Turin by Michele Rondoni (Fotografia Alfieri) in 1868 and was called the photograph of "Don Bosco with skullcap". The image shows a constructed pose, rigid in posture, with little vitality and spontaneity, contrary to what the Father and Teacher of Youth was. It seems that Don Bosco is absent, but in reality it is the photo of the "most afflicted and suffering face" of the Piedmontese saint, taken after an illness.

Turin, Italy - 1886 - Don Bosco had a well-proportioned face. His gaze spoke. His face communicated and knew how to convey serenity and joy to all those around him. The photo we show was taken in Sampierdarena, Genoa, on March 16, 1886, by Gustavo Luzzati. Don Bosco was 71 years old at the time. According to scholars, in this photo, Don Bosco shows a serene and friendly smile and the tender and affectionate gaze of a father.

Turin, Italy - 1880 - The photograph that we propose is a work of art by the photographer Michele Schemboche, portraying Don Bosco seated in an armchair, taken in Turin in 1880. It is interesting to note that this image was the best known and most used throughout history and probably corresponds to the most solemn representation of Don Bosco. The photo, with a few modifications, has in fact become the official image of the Beatification and then of the Canonization of Don Bosco. Indeed, the painter A. Enrie was inspired by it. While corresponding to the iconography of the time, it did not however coincide with the image that Don Bosco had left imprinted in the eyes and hearts of his boys and those who had known him: of an affable, gentle priest, always with a smile on his face.

(ANS - Seville) - How far and wide does Don Bosco go? Certainly up to the more than 130 countries on the five continents where the Salesians are present today. What if you wanted to go even further? Well, if we were to go to Antarctica, we'd also find a small image of Don Bosco there too. This photo was taken 15,073 kilometers from Spain as Don Bosco is present as patron of the military contingent that accompanies environmental researchers on the Antarctic continent.

  • Mongolia – Cl. Kanayochukwu, SDB: “My expectation is to encounter Christ with the youngsters”

(ANS – Ulaanbaatar) – “The presence of the Salesians in Nigeria has been a blessing to many youngsters. I appreciate so much, their closeness to the young, their openness and willingness to assist the young, the family and the welcoming spirit they create and most especially their simplicity of life.” This is Cl. Mbanu David, a young Salesian cleric who has accepted the call to be missionary ad gentes and is destined to serve young people in Mongolia.

  • 2020: "Young people on the front line"

Which young people should be the protagonists of history?

    Young agnostics? Yes.

Young people who have a lukewarm faith? Yes.

Young people who have estranged themselves from the Church? Yes.

Every young person has something to say to others, to adults, to priests, to nuns, to bishops and to the Pope.

  • RMG – Salesian Family Patron's Feast - January 24

(ANS – Rome) – With the fast-approaching 400th anniversary of Saint Francis de Sales (1567-1622) in two years, that is, 2022, we may see a growing movement of Don Bosco's Salesian Family to explore their Patron Saint. The overall feeling in many provinces is that the young Salesians don't know much about St. Francis de Sales. There are two new young missionaries ready to enter Mongolia - one has read the Philothea (Lover of God) - Introduction to the Devout Life - of Saint Francis de Sales already 10 times, but the other young missionary (both practical trainees) never even heard about this book! Astounding!
