After the shooting at St. Francis Xavier Church in Owo, Nigeria, on Pentecost Sunday, there was a renewed focus on religious freedom and the rights of religious minorities around the world.

The Catholic Foundation, Aid to the Church in Need, found that today this fundamental right is not respected in 62 of 196 sovereign countries (31.6% of the total).

About 67% of the world's population, or about 5.2 billion people, live in nations where serious violations of religious freedom occur.

In 2021, it was estimated that 360 million Christians were persecuted worldwide and that Christians killed increased by 24% from 2020.
