Bulgaria - Visit of the General Councilor for Missions

22 October 2021

Stara Zagora, Bulgaria - October 2021 - From 18 to 22 October Fr Alfred Maravilla, General Councilor for Missions, accompanied by Fr Pavel Zenišek, from the Missions Sector, visited the Salesian presence in Bulgaria to get to know the Salesians better, the lay missionary volunteers and the challenges and opportunities for future development. The Salesians from the Czech Republic had arrived in Kazanlak in 1994, invited by the Greek Catholic bishop, and turned their pastoral attention especially to the Roma People and to two parishes of the Byzantine rite, supported from the beginning by various volunteers. Today, in the town of Stara Zagora, next to the Roma quarter, the Salesians are building an educational center with a public church in the style of the Eastern rite and the residence of the Salesian community. As expected, during the visit, Fr Martin Hobza, Superior of the Salesian Province of the Czech Republic (CEP), with his Vicar and the Provincial Economer, joined Fr Maravilla to dialogue with the Salesians on the challenges and possibilities for the growth and development of Don Bosco's charism in Bulgaria. In addition, they also met the Greek Catholic bishop, Most Rev. Christo Proykov. At the end of the visit, Fr Maravilla exhorted the missionaries to "dream with hope for and with the young people of Bulgaria."
