Peru - Inauguration of an eminent Polish Salesian Fr Edmund Szeliga’s monument

Lima, Peru - December 2021 - On 9 December in the "Parque Polonia" of Lima, a ceremony was held to commemorate the figure of the Polish Salesian missionary Edmund Szeliga (1911-2005), who dedicated 70 years of his life to missionary work among indigenous peoples and had been researching traditional medicine in the Amazon and the Andean region. He has gained worldwide popularity in the field of ethnomedicine thanks to anticancer treatments based on the use of vilcacora (cat's claw), an original plant of the Peruvian jungle. The medallion with the bust of Szeliga was made by the Salesian sculptor, Fr Leszek Kruczek of the Krakow Province (PLS), and was sponsored by Mr. Artur Ulrich. In addition to the sculptor Fr Kruczek and the Provincial of the Krakow Province (PLS), Fr Marcin Kaznowski, the ceremony was also attended by Fr Manuel Cayo, Provincial of the Salesian Province of Peru (PER), Fr Vicente Santilli, other Salesians, representatives of the Peruvian local authorities, religious, representatives of the diplomatic corps, scientific circles, the media and non-governmental organizations, as well as a group of the Peruvian-Polish Family Association "Dom Polski" with its President, and Polish tourists.
