Spain - Day of pastoral innovation: pastoral accompaniment in schools and formation in emotional education and mental health

08 April 2022

Madrid, Spain - March 2022 - On March 24, over 100 educators from the Salesian Province of St. James the Greater (SSM) gathered online to celebrate the annual Day of Pastoral Innovation. Two themes animated the work: pastoral accompaniment in schools and formation in emotional education and mental health. The formative session was led by José Ramón González Toca, psychologist and head of the therapeutic classroom of the "Salesianos Los Boscos" in Logroño. Fr Xabier Camino, Delegate for Youth Ministry, gave an overview of how the project "Pastoral Accompaniment in Schools", of the SSM Province, is being implemented. "Two out of three centers are already working on this innovative model of pastoral action, with the formation times for accompaniment offered by the Province, and with the institutional commitment of the centers involved and the work and strategy implemented in the centers. Each at their own pace, in a coordinated way, designed for each educational reality." José Ramón González Toca, in addition to talking about how mental health is being experienced in these times of uncertainty, proposed tools for working on emotional education with young students. “We have to help them build good mental health. Teach them to be aware of their capabilities. Interpersonal intelligence, self-concept, self-esteem, and the capacity to control. All of this can be learned about. All this will help us to educate them beyond just performance.”
