Kenya - Commencement of the 9th Provincial Chapter for East Africa Province

06 June 2022

NAIROBI, KENYA - On 2nd of June, 2022, the Province of East Africa (AFE) started its 9th Provincial chapter whose theme is Credible and Relevant: Life and mission in fidelity to the charism. The chapter, which has been convened at the Salesian Theological Center (Don Bosco Utume) began in the evening with a refection guided by Fr. Mathew KJ, Sdb. He challenged the members to be credible and relevant in their mission by listening to what God is telling them. This, he reflected, will enable the Salesians to make God more visible to the young people. He invited the members of the chapter to take out the mantle of privilege in order to identify themselves with those that they serve.

The chapter comprises of 59 Salesians from the four countries that make up the province, that is, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan and Tanzania. There are five observers that include, an FMA, a Cooperator, a Past Pupil and two Salesians. Fr. Clement Vaclav who just concluded his five month-long extra-ordinary visitation in the province is one of the two Salesians. The other is Fr. Philip Lazatin, one of the news missionaries in AFE from Philippines.

This morning (3rd June), his Grace archbishop Philip Anyolo of Nairobi Archdiocese celebrated the Holy Eucharist for the chapter members where he invited them to be grateful to God for the wonderful charism but also to be credible and relevant servants. Later, the Provincial superior and the economer presented their reports to the assembly. In the evening, the chapter members had the chance to listen to four lay panelists on what the lay people expect about lay participation in the Salesian mission.

This fraternal gathering is entrusted with the task of reviewing the implementation of GC 28 and PC 8 deliberations tied to the Post-chapter reflection with particular attention to the action programme for the six-year period. The chapter will conclude on 7th of June, 2022. This chapter is arguably the last before the possible multiplication of the province expected in the near future.
