Italy - Formation of Formators from Italy and Middle East: "Formation and Identity"

04 July 2022

Rome, Italy - July 2022 - From June 29 to July 2, at the "San Tarcisio" work in Rome, just under thirty Salesians who are part of the Formation Teams related to Initial Formation in Italy and the Middle East met for a session of ongoing training and sharing prepared by the Provincial Vicars, as they are responsible for formation in their Provinces. It is traditional for this meeting to choose an important and current theme of the formation paths each year. The topic chosen was "Formation and Identity" where the term identity was not primarily conjugated with the charismatic or consecrated aspect, but as "sexual identity and identification," as a cultural phenomenon that strongly impacts the younger generations and also in the dynamics of vocational discernment. Three valuable papers by Salesians, Italian formators, opened the reflection by framing it on a philosophical, theological, and pastoral level. Speeches that were deliberately concise but rich in stimuli, which will have to be metabolized again later, nevertheless served for the first group and assembly comparisons. Other interventions, such as that of Dr. Chiara D'Urbano, author of numerous publications, provided elements for reflection by opening educational and formative perspectives. The theme requires much prayer, attentive listening to the young Salesians, young people, and the Word of God in a "scrutinium veritatis" (model: cf. Acts 15:1-33) because the dialogue and discernment between culture and magisterial texts calls for study, sharing and discernment starting precisely from the formators themselves. The challenge has been "conscientized" and thematized in this valuable and courageous beginning of reflection. The ongoing revision of the Ratio will be a great opportunity to transform the instances that have emerged into a formative path.
