26 January 2023

America - January 2023 - For the purpose of dialoguing and finding concrete actions to respond to the Rector Major's Strenna 2023, "AS THE YEAST IN TODAY'S HUMAN FAMILY. The Lay Dimension of the Family of Don Bosco," the Past Pupils of America met on the Zoom platform on Jan. 17. The event was convened by Eduardo Pessoa Cavalcante, Vice-President of the World Confederation and World Councilor for the Americas of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco, who through the Formation Commission, coordinated by Mario Lizano, President of the Past Pupils of Costa Rica, presented a program to continue with formation meetings throughout this year. The first of these gatherings, held on January 17, was coordinated by Guatemalan Alumni President Mario Reyes. The main talk was by Venancio de León, of the Guatemalan Federation, who spoke about the importance and good practice of the "exercise of the good death," and who also recalled that lay people are a gift to the Church, called to do their work knowing that the best prayer is the one that is done from the heart. The speaker, after emphasizing that Don Bosco's Preventive System is a transforming agent of society, then added, "Among the tasks or commitments we take on, we promise to help young people to be aware that they are leaven, with the confidence that we can be saints, doing as much good as possible, with simple gestures of joy, generosity, and kindness." The meeting ended with the testimony of another Guatemalan past pupil, Omar García. The next meeting has been set for next March 25.
