Papua New Guinea - Fr. Alfred Maravilla on animation visit to the Salesian PGS Vice-Province

20 February 2023

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – Fr. Alfred Maravilla, General Councilor for Missions, during his animation visit starting Feb 12, 2023, met the college aspirants of the ‘Savio Haus’ Aspirantate, some past pupils, ADMA, and Salesian Cooperators. He was also able to visit the communities of the FMA, SCG (Caritas Sisters of Jesus), and the MSMHC (Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians) and gave the ‘Good morning’ talk to the 1050 students of Don Bosco technical School, Gabutu. An important moment of his visit was a full-day meeting with the Provincial Council to study the current missionary thought and praxis of the Congregation as well as examine the possibilities of the Vice Province to respond to the invitation, dating back to 2018, of the Marist Bishop of Vanuatu, Bp. John Bosco Baremes, to start a new presence in the country. On February 21 Fr. Maravilla will leave for Vanuatu together with the PGS Superior to meet Bp. Baremes. The Vice Province of Blessed Philip Rinaldi (PGS) is made up of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. 43 years ago, in 1980, the first Salesians arrived in Papua New Guinea, and in 1995 in the Solomon Islands. Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu are in Melanesia and have great similarities in their culture, language, and social context.
