30 March 2023

Warsaw, Poland - March 2023 - March 24 marked the National Day of Remembrance for Poles who saved Jews under German occupation. To mark the occasion, educational meetings, lectures and film screenings were held across the country to commemorate the heroic deeds performed by so many citizens during World War II. Among the many celebrations, noteworthy is the one held in Warsaw in memory of the Salesians Fr. Michał Kubacki and Fr. Jan Stanek, who helped a number of Jews during World War II, including Halina Ashkenazy (a well-known Polish survivor and witness of the Shoah). The celebrations began with a Mass presided over by Msgr. Romuald Kaminski, Bishop of Warsaw-Prague, in the Salesian Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A plaque in memory of two Salesian priests was then unveiled at the end of the Mass. "May the acts of these two Salesians be a model for us to follow, especially for the younger generations. May they inspire us to love each other, regardless of religion or belief, may they inspire us to love life and respect our homeland," said, finally, Fr. Tadeusz Jarecki, Superior of the Salesian Province of Poland-Warsaw (PLE).
