Mongolia - First historic meeting of Salesians in Mongolia and Siberia

06 November 2019

Ulanbaatar, Mongolia - October 2019 - From 14 to 21 October, three Salesians from the Salesian mission in Yakustsk, belonging to the Slovak Province (SLK), visited the Delegation of Mongolia, belonging to the Province of Vietnam and led by the delegate Fr Paul Leung. Fr Pavol Michalka, Fr Marian Peciar and Fr Jozef Toth, along with the trainees recently arrived from India and Rwanda, form the northernmost Salesian community in Asia in Yakustsk. Fr Toth served in Mongolia in the early years of that mission and so, with the support of the superiors of both sides, he managed to organize this historic meeting. During the meeting, the guests visited the Salesian presences in Darkhan, Ulanbaatar and Shuwuu and the beauties of Mongolia, and there was talk of the possibility of a reciprocation of the visit and of future collaborations between the two communities, united by similar challenges, such as extreme weather conditions and a minimal Catholic presence. Fr Toth commented, "Thank you very much for the inspiration and for having held this meeting after 3 years. The distance between Ulanbaatar and Yakutisk is over 3,000 km, but Don Bosco's heart is bigger ... And in these days we have planned the future visit of 'Don Bosco Mongolia' in Yakutia."
