France – ‘ONEWORLD’ project: “Will COVID-19 teach us anything?”

08 May 2020

(ANS – Paris) – The ‘ONEWORLD’ awareness and education project was born out of the unprecedented worldwide health crisis we are facing today. COVID-19 is a rare event that affects all 7.7 billion planetary citizens, without exception.

Of course, in time everything will be alright. This is not a naive belief. We are not saying that everything will change suddenly, that our civilization is collapsing, that globalization is dead, and that we are entering into an entirely new world. Nor is it a question of being overwhelmed by deadly anxieties or reckless illusions. What we need to do is ask ourselves is what we are going through, “Will it teach us anything? How are we going to decide to turn the page on this chapter together? How are we going to regain our zest for life and our vital impulse to rejoice together?”

“We know very well that everything will not change all suddenly,” the organizers say. “But being faithful to the pedagogy of Don Bosco, we will take one small step at a time. The COVID-19 pandemic has permitted us to discover that another world is also possible. Beyond ourselves, we also note the extraordinary dedication of so many at the service of the vulnerable and fragile, in them we find the ability of humanity to mobilize her forces of courage, tenacity, and perseverance. And to take care of each other, by inventing new forms of solidarity. And to refocus on the essentials of humanity and our support of those most in need. We are also rediscovering ourselves as the inhabitants of this ‘common house’ of which Pope Francis speaks - that there is no doubt of the possibility for the worst for us (global warming, pandemics, etc.) - but also a great possibility for the very best - a new solidarity, exchanges, new scientific discoveries, etc.”

The shared, tragic, and unprecedented experience of COVID-19 does not immediately promise us an enlightened tomorrow, but it does summon us to roll up our sleeves and get to work - that wherever we live with the people around us and with the means at our disposal. So, the next day will not be in vain.

A partnership between the NGO “Don Bosco Intuition Entertainers Media” and Youth Ministry of the FRB Salesian Provinces, it revolves around two aspects:

1. The DBIEM team produced a 7-minute short film (French and English) that examines the essential issues surrounding this pandemic, its causes and effects.

2. It invites children, young people, and adults to take an online quiz at the end of the film. This quiz has two parts:

a. To promote understanding, awareness and empathy (These are multiple-choice varying in difficulty: easy, normal, and challenging).

b. I decide and I commit (Multiple Choice Questions).

Finally, the focus of these two aspects supports and promotes discussion on this topic in small groups with the goal to enrich the reflections and the commitment of each participant.
