Argentina – Evangelizing through music: far beyond the four walls

(ANS - Córdoba) - He is 20 years old and has a talent for music. He was selected along with 99 other "envoys" to take to the networks and make them an instrument of evangelization. “Music has always been something that has characterized me, a channel to transmit my feelings in a harmonious and melodic way, putting my gift at the service of others.” Speaking is Nicolas Narvaes, a young man from Salesian circles who participated in the Catholic musical reality show “Enviados” and who won a place among the top 100 of the 1,400 participants.

Nico, born in Mendoza, met Jesus in the Salesian courtyard and is today in the formation house in Fontana as an aspirant. It was his comrades from the aspirantate who encouraged him to participate in the competition organized by "Aguas Claras Misión", a Catholic audiovisual production company.

“Ever since I discovered the 'ministry' of music in the Church, I've met many people who support me and for my part I will do everything necessary,” says Nico. “Some of these people passed me a video of the Catholic singer Athenas, inviting me to participate in the reality show 'Enviados'.”

The first reaction was to upload a video in which he sang a song by one of the 3 artists who lead the contest: Athenas, Jon Carol and Kairy Marquez. Nico chose “Tú eres más fuerte”, by Jon Carlo.

In this phase, there were 1,400 participants from all over the world. “All with the same objective and the same dream, to make their musical gift known to be able to offer it to God through this reality show. After a few days they contacted me to tell me that I was among the 100 preselected,” continues the young man.

At that point, a “mission” path began with weekly challenges that were assigned to the participants. “One Saturday we had to upload a hymn to Maria, then recite a Rosary live on Instagram. Then a song based on a biblical quote, for the biblical month. All this had to be done by each of the 100 and at the same time, the producer and his assistants accompanied us on each mission. It was exciting to see during these weeks how each 'correspondent' gave witness through his music,” he said.

Today Nico wished to send a message to the other young people:

In this period of the pandemic, I believe that music and social networks play a key role in evangelization. Many people find it difficult to be locked up, isolated, alone. Many can connect with their families and friends only through social networks. It is not what we want, but it is what we need to do to take care of ourselves as a society.

Music brings us closer and closer, consoles us, makes us happy. And something so beautiful can only come from God. I believe that each one has his role and his gift to put at the service of others and always bear witness to the living God among us.
