Chile – Several success stories of Salesian education: Gold Medal students at "WorldSkills Chile 2020"

04 December 2020

(ANS - Santiago) - The students of the Salesian Institute of Talca, namely Nicolás Méndez and Maverick Silva, of the 4th year in the field of Electronics, and Sebastián Palma of the 4th year of Electricity; and the pupil Sebastián González Cassone, 4th year student of the Alameda educational center, participated in the 4th edition of the "WorldSkills Chile 2020" Vocational Training Olympics, held in digital format in November. In these competitions, they achieved the Gold Medal in their respective competitions. The recognition opens them new doors on their professional and working future.

For Sebastian Palma, first classified in the Industrial Control competition, the experience was gratifying despite the stress of competing. “It was a week of hard work, struggling with anxiety, stress and fatigue, but when the closing ceremony on Friday arrived, I could only think of one thing: I want that medal!”

The students Maverick Silva and Nicolás Méndez, victorious in the Mechatronics competition, are now delighted with this victory. For Maverick it is the coronation of a dream. He remembers, in fact, that last year, when the class gave a theme to write in the form of a newspaper article, "I put the title: 'Student of the Salesian Educational Center of Talca wins WorldSkills 2020'. Well, I never imagined it would actually come true! It was very rewarding.”

For his part, Nicolás said that the experience was one of great learning. “I think the competition has helped us improve and develop our skills as electrical technicians and learn at advanced levels of mechatronics,” he said.

The expert professors Lucas Olave and Patricio Cáceres also commented on these successes and acknowledged that the competition was really fierce, with participants also coming from other countries and high-level challenges, in which it was not possible to improvise, because the competitions required a hard previous workout. And this year, then, the additional difficulty of the remote mode was also added.

For the Salesian Institute of Alameda, in the center of Santiago, the standard-bearer of success was Sebastián González Cassone, who won the Gold Medal in the "Computer Networks" category, thanks to a model developed with Professor Raúl Vásquez. Today the teacher himself testifies that not even this result came by chance, indeed: it is the result of a long journey, made up of commitment, formation, self-learning and study, in which a Bronze Medal had already been obtained.

“Winning the first prize in my specialty filled me with joy,” says Sebastián. “Everything I learned during the third and fourth years paid off and was acknowledged. Worldskills is a great opportunity to test everything one learns… And it has also helped me feel more confident in the world of work,” he said. Source:
