Cameroon – Classrooms full of life in new Salesian secondary school in Mimboman

21 December 2020

(ANS - Yaoundé) - The construction of the secondary school of the Salesians in Cameroon, in the district of Mimboman, in the capital of the country, Yaoundé, is now complete, up and running. The boys and girls are delighted to be able to study in a well-equipped space adapted to their educational needs, leaving behind the old building where they shared the spaces with some very noisy vocational training workshops, which made it very difficult to follow and carry out lessons.

The new building, operational since last November, features 12 classrooms, 10 equipped for conventional lessons, another soon to be used as a laboratory and the last to be set up as a computer room. It also has 3 offices and 3 classrooms to store the center's various equipment.

The new school welcomes about 500 young people, who are guaranteed the right to quality education. And the offer has also been expanded, with courses reaching the Baccalaureate.

The Salesian school is also committed to gender equality, ensuring that at least half of the places available are destined for female pupils, that they have safe spaces and above all that education is provided to all, guaranteeing all students the same possibilities.

The Salesian school project in Mimboman still has a long way to go and its director, Bediehide Octave Christian, explains: "We plan to build two more modules, with classrooms for teaching staff, administrative services, the library, workshops, a multipurpose room and a dining room." Nonetheless, the modern and functional structure is a great step forward for the education of many boys and girls.

For its part, "Bosco Global", a Spanish Salesian NGO that works with education to build a more just, equitable and sustainable world, and which supported the construction project of the Salesian secondary school in Mimboman, promised to continue to support this project, which is allowing many young people to access quality education in a neighborhood where education is perhaps the only opportunity to break the cycle of poverty that chains many families.

A video is available online that presents the new structure and gives voice to some of the protagonists of Mimboman.
