Peru – “Salesian Flags” of the Bicentennial

08 February 2021

(ANS - Lima) - Moved by faith in God and in His people, heir to Don Bosco's Preventive System and in the context of the Bicentennial of National Independence, the Salesian Province of Peru, whose mission is “To form good Christians and upright citizens”, renews its commitment to continue working for the construction of a more democratic, just and united Peru. And it does so by sharing “four Salesian flags”, of which the respective mottos and clarifications are described below.

Priority to young people, the poorest and at high social risk and vulnerability.

Because we love young people with a true Salesian heart, especially the poorest:

We renew our commitment to be present where they are, generating equal opportunities for all. In this way we contribute to reducing the gaps of poverty and inequality, and we continue to move forward in the implementation of educational-pastoral projects focused on young people and their families. We are committed to the defense of young people, especially those who are marginalized and victims of violations of their rights and any kind of abuse and violence.

A renewed commitment to education.

Because we are convinced that education is the most powerful way to transform life and form better citizens:

We renew our commitment to the qualification of persons and educational-pastoral processes in all our environments and we are committed to continuing to generate spaces that allow us to build "a country in dialogue and in peace in which spaces for meeting and of recognition in favor of living a citizenship of solidarity, justice and dialogue." We join the Global Pact for Education proposed by Pope Francis, rekindling our commitment to and with the younger generations, renewing our passion for a more open and inclusive education, capable of patient listening, constructive dialogue and mutual understanding and moved by the dream of a society steeped in Christian values, as Don Bosco dreamed of.

For an active and participatory citizenship.

Because we are committed to an active and participatory citizenship that fights against all types of corruption:

We renew our ability to listen, openness and active dialogue among young people, so that they are protagonists and transformers of the change our society needs, strengthening their critical thinking and their formation for citizenship. We support safe, free and consistent environments, in which the central axis of our pastoral educational work is the dignity of the human person. We accompany young people in discovering the essential values of life, in their personal spiritual growth and in the development of all their potential.

Sustainability as a challenge.

As we recognize that our common home is in a critical situation, we take sustainability as a generational challenge:

We promote an ecological conversion, renewing our commitment to caring for the environment, our common home, acknowledging the need for an integral transformation, a sustainable economy and decisive action. We listen to the cry of young people in their ecological claim and we promote an ecological spirituality that defends, with all our passion, the environment with concrete and lasting initiatives.
