India – Energy Forever for a green future: Solar Powered SPCI house

02 March 2021

(ANS – New Delhi) – “That's one small step for a man; a giant leap for mankind”. Neil Armstrong's immortalised words hold good for anything important that we initiate, however insignificant it may appear. It holds good for the inauguration of the new 45-kilowatt solar power plant on the grid and rainwater-collectors at SPCI Don Bosco House, New Delhi on 23 February 2021. Supported by Jugend Eine Welt, in partnership with Don Bosco Network- Bosconet, this installation is one vital step towards fulfilling the Salesian congregational ambition of greening all Salesian campuses worldwide by 2032.

Don Bosco Network's vision has always been in alignment with the environment actions outlined by the Sustainable Development Goals while also resonating with Pope Francis' call to care for our common home- the Earth. In December 2019, the Salesian Energy Forever Conference reflecting on an appropriate Don Bosco response to the environmental crisis impacting the young people we care for and serve, enumerated concrete actions that the Salesians worldwide could take to make an important difference.

Don Bosco Network actively promotes many of those green initiatives: greening campuses with clean renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, promoting afforestation and green cover, greening training, updated green skills and promoting jobs in green sectors, e-learning, efficient natural resource management through rainwater harvesting, waste management, etc.

Fr. Biju Michael SDB, the Regional Superior, and Fr. Davis SDB, Provincial, Salesian Province of Delhi inaugurated the 45 KW on-grid solar plant at the Don Bosco SPCI House in Dwarka, New Delhi, putting it on the green map of Don Bosco India. On the proud occasion, Fr. Biju Michael acknowledged the instrumental role of Don Bosco Network in conceptualising and successfully implementing this important contribution towards achieving the goals of the Energy Forever initiative in India. He especially appreciated the Director, Fr. Noel Maddhichetty SDB, and Fr. Santhanam Ubagaram SDB, Assistant Director, as well as the team, for this commendable achievement.

Don Bosco Network continues its commitment to the various green goals established by the Energy Forever Conference because Energy Forever is the way to a future forever for the young people; especially those in vulnerable situations in India and around the world.
