Italy – Conclusion of Fr Pèrez Godoy’s Extraordinary Visitation to Southern Italy Province

01 June 2021

(ANS - Naples) - The Extraordinary Visitation of Fr Juan Carlos Pérez Godoy, Councilor for the Mediterranean Region, to the "Blessed Michele Rua" Province of Southern Italy (IME) ended yesterday, Monday 31 May, in Naples.

For exactly four months, from 31 January to 31 May, Fr Pérez Godoy crossed southern Italy, Albania and Kosovo - whose missions also belong to the animation and government of the EMI - and met with the Salesian Family active in the 27 Salesian houses, engaged as they are in the educational mission in various sectors of pastoral animation with oratories, parishes, schools, and community-family homes.

“I'm happy to have known this Province in greater depth,” said the Regional Councilor. “It is a generous Salesian reality, made up of many young people, lay people and consecrated persons who, in this territory with many forms of social hardship, are committed by identifying themselves strongly with the spirit of Don Bosco.”

At the provincial headquarters in Naples, yesterday, Fr Pérez Godoy, with the help of the IME Provincial, Fr Angelo Santorsola, met all the Directors of the Salesian houses to present the final report of his extraordinary visit. “Looking ahead, the Salesian mission in Southern Italy is not only still valid, but it is necessary. In recent months, I've had the opportunity to verify various expressions of social and youth emergencies, such as unemployment, immigration, economic hardships, the lack of real support from the public sector. The Church represents one of the few presences that concretely mobilizes itself with actions of help and solidarity. And in this sense, the Salesians, with their specific charism for the least privileged and most needy, can take up all these challenges and face them with a united provincial and regional action plan.”

The day ended with a moment of thanksgiving and conviviality around the Visitor, “grateful,” as Fr Santorsola pointed out, “for having enlightened and encouraged us to continue with enthusiasm and hope the service to the young people of the South.”
