"Missioni Don Bosco" highlights Lebanon’s plight, with the country and its people going through the worst and most severe depression since the end of the civil war.
In El Houssoun the Salesians manage the “Don Bosco” youth center, a space open to children and young people of different backgrounds and origins, where various socio-educational, recreational and support activities are offered.
In Beirut, they have been running the “Angels of Peace” school since 2020, which guarantees non-formal schooling for refugee children.
The "Don Bosco" Technical Institute is active in Al Fidar, offering high-quality technical and vocational education and training to about 200 Lebanese children aged 13 to 20.
All these activities suffered a severe blow in August last year, due to the devastating explosion that destroyed a large part of the Beirut port area and many of the beneficiaries of the various activities carried out by the Salesians were affected in various ways by the explosion.
The Christmas Concert will see numerous Italian and foreign singers and musicians, the show emceed by Federica Panicucci, and will also feature the Italian Cinema Orchestra directed by maestro Adriano Pennino. Special guests will be the three young winners of the Christmas Contest, which TV2000 broadcast on Wednesday 22nd: Matteo Faustini (best lyrics), Valentina Tioli (best music) and “I Fake” (best interpretation). The most appropriate artistic presence - given the reason for the event - will perhaps be that of the young members of the "Dolci note" choir of Rome. But there shall also be many other great national and international artists who will take the stage to perform and invite spectators to support the proposed humanitarian projects by calling or sending a text message to 45582.
This is why the Salesian Fr Simon Zakerian came from Beirut to present the situation in the country. “Before the crisis,” Fr Zakerian offered as an example, “a liter of milk cost 3,000 Lebanese Lire; now it has reached 24,000, about 12 euros, this while salaries are frozen at the values prior to the outbreak of the crisis, around 35 euros per month.” Medical supplies have begun to run out, but so has electricity: "We live whole days in the dark and winter will be very difficult because there are no means to stay warm,” he explained.
For years Lebanon has welcomed numerous Syrian and Iraqi refugees who arrive in situations of extreme poverty. In addition to educational work with the most disadvantaged sections of the Lebanese population, the Salesians have welcomed many refugees and started a process of integration, starting with the youngest. “The needs in this period are so many and we need your support,” said Fr Zakerian, launching his appeal for solidarity.
