Senegal – From School-Benches to Labour Market: in Dakar They Teach to Believe in the Future

02 August 2016

(ANS - Dakar) – In the month oh July, the Don Bosco Centre in Dakar was illumined, filled with smiles, pride, and hopes for the future. There was the conclusion of the school year, and thirty young men were given a certificate that states that together it is possible to grow, it is possible to do.

Undoubtedly, the two years at school were not without difficulties. But the young pupils have always been encouraged to be good students, good citizens, and good believers. Words such as self-employment and entrepreneurship took a new, clearer and more real significance. Believing in oneself, in one’s own capabilities: This is what, first of all, they learned on school-benches. Salesians, teachers and students, they all gathered to celebrate this important goal and achievement. VIS awarded prizes to those students who distinguished themselves for their commitment and behaviour, so as to encourage them not to give up, to continue to fight to create the future. At the graduation ceremony, an official of the Ministry of Labour was also present: he reminded the youth the importance of professional formation, which is a key activity for society and for the development of the country.

Both VIS and Missioni Don Bosco invest, fight and work for this: guarantee that the youth be given an adequate vocational formation in plumbing, cooking and tailoring, which will enable them to work and contribute to the growth and development of their own country. The greatest emotion is seeing the works done by the students during the last year. In their works, in their achievements, there is all their good will to do, do grow, to not give up and surrender.

And while these first exception thirty young men begin a formative training period to introduce them to practical work, VIS and Missioni Don Bosco will begin the construction of the second floor of the school, to increase its capacity of reception, to provide instruments and spaces more adequate to formation, to increase the courses and the subject matters. To enable everybody to study and to learn a job. To believe in the future.

With thanks to Michel Metanmo – VIS Operator
