Cameroon – Provincial Councils of entire Africa-Madagascar Region gathered around Rector Major

18 March 2022

(ANS - Yaoundé) - Yesterday afternoon, March 17, the Provincials of all the Salesian Provinces and Vice-Provinces of the Africa-Madagascar Region, with the members of their Councils, began the Spiritual Exercises guided by the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime. A total of 96 Salesians from 14 Provinces and Vice-Provinces of the continent are present, in addition to the Regional Councilor, Fr Alphonse Owoudou.

The Spiritual Exercises, being held in Yaoundé at the headquarters of the Cameroonian Episcopal Conference, began on Thursday afternoon, immediately after the conclusion of the Rector Major’s visit to the Salesian presence in Cameroon, and will continue until next March 23.

Maintaining the structure the Rector Major has already adopted during his trips to Ecuador, for the Inter-America Region (February 4-10), and Brazil, for the America South Cone Region (February 14-18), the Exercises include several conferences given by Fr Á.F. Artime on the first of the eight programmatic lines delivered after the 28th General Chapter, namely the options for growing in Salesian identity.

Specifically, the 10th Successor of Don Bosco prepared several talks on topics such as:

- Provincials and Councilors: Men of God;

- The Vocation to live with a deep identity as consecrated persons;

- The words of the Major Rectors (up to Fr Pascual Chávez) on the ministry of the Provincial and the Council

- Study to be loved

- Evangelization as a priority of the mission, yesterday and today

- Preferential action for the neediest and poorest young people.

At the same time, the moments of meeting and dialogue between the Rector Major and the assembly, during which the themes of animation and government of the Congregation are addressed, are also key moments; as are the times for shared spirituality and fraternity, characteristic of every Salesian gathering.

The idea of preaching the Spiritual Exercises to the Provincial Councils in all the Regions of the Congregation is a specific choice of the Tenth Successor of Don Bosco to show them his closeness and to encourage a coordinated and fluid advancement of all Salesian realities along the fundamental axes indicated by the GC28.

At the end of the Exercises, before returning to Italy, the Rector Major shall visit Salesian works in Equatorial Guinea, which, like Cameroon, belongs to the "Our Lady of Africa" Vice-Province of Tropical Equatorial Africa (ATE).
