Portugal – Knowing and cultivating the Salesian missionary dimension

18 March 2022

(ANS - Lisbon) - From March 7 to 11, Fr Pavel Ženisek, the Head of Mission Animation for the Salesian Missions Sector, visited the St. Anthony Province in Portugal (POR) and had several meetings with those responsible for the missions sector at the national level and with the missionaries. During his stay, Fr Ženisek also had the opportunity to dialogue with members of the team of Mission Animation and Volunteering and visit several other Salesian communities across the country.

The first day of his visit in Portugal was dedicated to the meeting with the team of Mission Animation of Portugal, chaired by Fr Sílvio Faria, which was also attended by the POR Provincial, Fr José Aníbal Mendonça, and the Provincial Delegate for Youth Ministry, Fr Álvaro Lago. During the meeting, they reflected together on topics such as the First Proclamation, the formation of volunteers, the "Missão Anima" project, and the role of the "Missão Dom Bosco - Fundo Solidário Salesiano" platform.

In the following days, Fr Ženisek visited other Salesian communities in POR - namely those of Estoril, Évora, Manique, Porto, and Setúbal - being accompanied on this tour by Fr Faria and Salesian Erick Mawanga, a young Salesian in formation originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, (Vice Province of Africa Congo - ACC), sent last year as a missionary to Portugal as part of the Europe Project.

Especially noteworthy was Fr Ženisek's visit to the Salesian house in Setúbal, a community active in the proclamation and missionary dimension in an urban context. The local community was able to present to the in-charge person of Mission Animation in the Missions Sector all the work that is being developed in this context, a work well attuned to the current indications for the missionary dimension in the European context.

The work is characterized, in fact, by its being a popular, or working class, presence that often has to deal with experiences of First Proclamation, and therefore offers a fertile ground for the Salesian mission in the country.
