Ukraine – Solidarity and coordination bear hoped-for results

31 March 2022

(ANS - Lviv) - Salesian efforts for the people affected by the war, in and outside Ukraine, continue at all levels. The Salesians remain committed in the field, in direct relief to refugees, and in the work of coordination to ensure that the relief machine works as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Don Jacek Zdzieborski, Director of the Salesian Mission Office in Warsaw, and Fr Piotr Gozdalski, Director of the Salesian Missionary Foundation "Don Bosco", also based in Warsaw, have recently visited Lviv, in Ukraine. They spent some time with the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians who are present in the city, to share a bit of their difficult and painful daily experience.

Both Salesian realities are actively involved in this emergency; in particular, the Salesian Mission Office in Warsaw has taken charge of purchasing and bringing to their destination the mattresses, pillows and cots that - in a very effective team effort - the Salesian Mission Office in Bonn, Germany, has subsidized in favor of the fleeing Ukrainian population.

Other interesting news comes from Brazil, where in the space of a few hours we received the news of the launch of the solidarity campaign of the Province of Brazil-Recife (BRE) and a new contribution from the Province of Brazil Campo Grande (BCG).

The fact that the Salesian effort for this emergency - the fruit not only of great solidarity and passion, but also of qualified commitment and careful coordination - is truly fruitful is also demonstrated by other elements. On the one hand, the fact that Salesian presences in Ukraine and neighboring countries have reported having sufficient food, clothing and hygiene items for current needs; on the other, the trust gained by Salesian organizations from other organizations outside this galaxy.

In Great Britain, South Korea, Ireland and many other nations, Salesian entities receive donations and aid from organizations and institutional donors.

"We have a serious responsibility to all our donors – to come up to their expectations!" says, in a spirit of animation, Fr George Menamparampil, head of Salesian Emergency Response Coordination.
